In celebration of black history month, I made a small but growing playlist of some of my favorite black "indie" artist.  I'm using the term indie loosely, this playlist is mostly comprised of artist I feel like move to a different wave than the mainstream culture.
When I first initially got into music and started going to shows I always noticed I was either the only person of color or one of a few.  Growing up in a Midwestern suburban neighborhood it seemed like black people could only fit into one box and act a certain way.  Fitting into that box meant listening to the same mainstream big name rappers (not that was a bad thing), but I could not always relate. I just knew that there was something better out there.  For a long time I had no idea black people could make music that wasn't traditional gospel or rap.
Growing up I thought black people could only be one thing, these artist helped me realize we can be so much more.  We can be anything.  Hope you enjoy, and Happy Black History Month.
